Abstract

Biosensing in livestock and poultry industry is a developing market that is rapidly gaining global recognition. Biosensing technology can offer novel avenues for monitoring of health and productivity of livestock and poultry. It would offer devices having high accuracy, sensitivity, reproducibility, speed and ease of use as compared to existing technologies. Biosensors can be of potential use in both livestock and poultry industry for applications like detection and identification of infectious diseases, contaminants and toxins in feed, therapeutic drug residues in animal husbandry, oestrus and pregnancy detection, etc. Precision livestock farming techniques, associated with microfluidics, sound analysers, image detection, sweat analyser, etc. are increasingly useful for group or individual animal monitoring. This chapter would cover recent developments and future prospects in the field of biosensing for improved health, production and management of animals in the livestock and poultry industry.
