Abstract
This chapter summarizes the physical principles of infrared spectroscopy in an interpretive way with the main goal to highlight the background on which this technique evolved into one of the currently most potent physicochemical methods of investigation. Molecular vibrations, normal mode analysis, and essentials of infrared spectra interpretation are included. The fundamentals of spectrometer design philosophies and their impact on the final performance and applicability of infrared spectroscopy are discussed. This is followed by a brief comparison with other techniques, with focus on their strengths and weaknesses in similar applications. An overview of current trends in the development of methodologies and instrumentation across the field of IR spectroscopy is provided as well.
